Renovation Adventures: Ceiling Fan Edition [May. 20th, 2009|02:58 am]
I'm technically halfway through installing a new ceiling fan in my bedroom. This likely would have been easier if I'd just bought a light kit and attached it to the ceiling fan that was in there, but the fan that was in there was one of those completely generic white ceiling fans likely picked up on sale. It was ugly, and it had to go. So, after much fuss, the fan came free of its tenacious hold. I looked at the wires up in the (very old looking) outlet box and saw:

A bunch of white wires electrical-taped together with a single white wire coming out of the bottom

A bunch of black wires electrical-taped together and sealed at the bottom, shoved into the back of the box

A lone red wire

This is naturally somewhat disconcerting. Why were the black wires there to begin with? Why so many white wires for one fan? I am giving serious thought to calling in a professional to get those wires figured out. Anyone know a good one? Is anyone on here possibly electrically inclined themselves?

Owwwwww [Apr. 4th, 2009|08:11 pm]
Kidney stones suck. I got about two hours of sleep last night when I was awakened by what felt like a HIDEOUS cramp in my lower back from doing too much dancing last night. Then I noticed the feeling wouldn't go away. So, the awake roommate drove me over to St. Joseph's emergency room, where the doc very quickly figured out that I likely had a kidney stone. While I was signing the second round of paperwork, they brought me some anti-nausea medication and a couple of Percocet. A little later (thank god this happened a weekend morning, the ER was empty and I got whisked right through) I got to ride the CAT scan thingie, and indeed it's a kidney stone.

On the other hand, Vicodin makes everything better. I'm kind of worried about the anti-nausea medication they gave me though: One of the common side effects of it is nausea. The hell? Oh, while I'm at it, Target's pharmacy medicine bottles are fantastic. Everything is very clearly written, childproof caps are optional, and they even mark them with a ring of your favorite color so that you can instantly tell your prescriptions from those of someone else in your house.

My WHAT is coming up? [Feb. 26th, 2009|10:26 pm]
So, I'm turning 30 a month from today. I have decided to do a blowout birthday party. I'm going to California! It's been much to long since I've gone wild at theme parks, so I'm jumping at the chance to do so. The itinerary currently stands as follows:

Sunday, March 22 Drive to Cali
23 Knott's Berry Farm
24 Magic Mountain
25 Chill Day: Beach, Nice Dinner, Tiki-Ti
26 DISNEYLAND
27 Disney's California Adventure/More Disneyland
28 Travel home

I currently have the possible hotels down to three. One is the Georgian, an Art Deco hotel on the beach in Santa Monica. It's a little out of the way of everything but the beach, so this one may get thrown out. Next is the Safari Inn in beautiful downtown Burbank. It's about in between Six Flags and Knott's/DLand, and is quite retro. The last possibility is the hotel on property at Knott's Berry Farm. Safari Inn is going for $75 a night, Knott's for $58. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward Knott's... the Buena Park area has usually been my home base when I'm in Cali, and I'm spending more time on that side of town than San Fernando/Santa Clarita valleys.

If you'd like to join me, let me know! If you're on my friends list, you're welcome to come for all or part of it; if you want to come for the whole thing, I have space available in my car.

"Go with throttle up." [Jan. 28th, 2009|11:37 am]
[music |Cirque du Soleil - Cantus-Mélopée | Powered by Last.fm]

It has been 23 years today since the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch. I was six and I remember it... I was home sick from school that day and saw it happen live. The incredible joy of watching seven of your fellow humans go flying into space, only to see the dream of flight come to an abrupt end. Someone sent me a link to video of it and I just couldn't push Play.

Artifacts [Jan. 14th, 2009|04:48 pm]

One of those weird things about moving into a new place is finding various ephemera from the previous residents, somehow missed by the cleaning crews. I've found out so far that the previous owner was married, on food stamps, had a dog, and liked Uncle Kracker. Food stamps and a mortgage, wow. How much would you be willing to bet that he got one of the adjustable rate interest-only loans?

I moved! [Jan. 6th, 2009|11:04 am]
So, the apartment is a thing of the past for me... I bought a house! It's a lot of work right now (and likely will continue to be for a good long time) but it's MINE. You're all invited over for a pool party once the weather warms up.

The Inevitable Holiday Party [Dec. 22nd, 2008|10:00 am]
[music |Groovelily - Gotham City Breakdown | Powered by Last.fm]

The work holiday party was last night. The first part of it was pretty dull... the usual dinner and dancing; drinks were being poured. It was a cash bar, but a very cheap cash bar. The second part was much, MUCH better. They set up a dessert buffet on the roof. Said roof is eight stories over downtown Scottsdale, and the railing is glass with a thin metal bar across the top. There was a firepit up there, and the view was as spectacular and twinkly as ever. Along with the dessert buffet... was Rock Band. They set up a projector so the screen was at least 8 feet high on the side of the elevator tower. Singing on top of a tall building was AMAZING. I highly recommend it if you get the chance.

I'm moving! [Dec. 8th, 2008|11:26 am]
[music |Cirque du Soleil - Hum Jaisa Na Dekha | Powered by Last.fm]

So, it's been a while since I've updated here. The big thing in my life right now... I'm closing on a house in less than two weeks! It's not too far of a move, only about 4 miles east of where I am now, 36th Street and Indian School. The house is a beauty, red brick built in 1950. There will be pool parties in the summer, and I'm planning on getting myself a pool table at some point as well. It should be quite the adventure.

Anyway, if you have some free time on the 23rd of December (yes, I know it's really close to Christmas) I would really appreciate help with schlepping all my stuff over to the new place. I'll be renting a truck, and of course copious amounts of pizza and beer will be provided at the new place. Current plan is to start over here around 8, and then press on until the job is done. If you're willing to help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Just let me know. Thanks!

Yay voting! [Nov. 4th, 2008|07:12 am]
[music |Dancing with the Stars in the background]

I biked over to the LDS church where my precinct is voting today. Of all the places I'd expect to find a bike rack... and nuthin'. I was part of the first batch of voters in, and since I've always been quick with scanner type things, I ended up being the first voter today in my precinct. Woo.

No on 102! [Nov. 2nd, 2008|02:56 pm]
By some cruel twist of fate, I received in the mail a flyer from the despicable people at the yes campaign. It's funded by Focus on the Family and the Knights of Columbus, both out-of-state groups. Apparently according to the flyer, if we vote yes on 102 it will keep judges from forcing homosexual marriage on the general populace. Um... wait a sec... They aren't going to be telling single Joe Schmo down the street that he'd better stop being interested in Cindy and start looking at Steve.

Proposition 102 (and by the same token Prop 8 in California) are just trying to tell people that they aren't allowed to love whoever they want. True love knows no bounds. Keep it that way. Vote NO on 102 and 8. Please.

Why It's Better in Europe [Sep. 26th, 2008|12:06 am]
The classic Dreamcast game Samba de Amigo just came out for the Wii this week. The trailers for it here show a family having fun playing... and a monkey.

Then I found the European trailer... two samba dancers, each wearing forty pounds of sequins and feathers:

Now which one makes the game look like more fun?

PS: Did the makers of the US trailer decide to shoot the commercial </i>inside</i> an IKEA store? Holy cow, I thought *my* living room looked like the catalogue exploded.

*snif* [Sep. 25th, 2008|11:55 pm]
Today was the end of the road for Washington Mutual. They've been bought out by JP Morgan Chase, meaning that all the WaMus are going to get phased out in favor of traditional Chase banks. Phooey. I loved the individual lecterns instead of the Great Wall of Tellers that you see everywhere. WaMu was the only bank that sent me a handwritten thank-you card for opening an account with them, and now they're gone.

The who? [Sep. 25th, 2008|04:03 pm]

Your result for Which Vampire the Masquerade Clan Are You?...

The Deceivers {Ravnos}

4 Assamite, 6 Brujah, 5 Gangrel, 11 Malkavian, 2 Nosferatu, 12 Toreador, 6 Tremere, 3 Ventrue, 5 Lasombra, 10 Tzimisce, 4 Setites, 6 Giovanni and 15 Ravnos!

The wickedly black Ravnos clan rely on illusion. Like the gypsies of old they use the greatest tool of all, the con. They know that things are rarely as they seem and they rely on this to get by. They tend to say exactly what they mean and mean exactly what they say. To assume anything beyond what has been stated is foolhardy at best when dealing with the Ravnos. Everything is about perception to them and karmatic action is very important to them. They see death as a natural part of life and they believe that you should never take pity on a sucker.

For you to be a Ravnos means that you rely on deception and perception. You love to test those around you and you have no problem cheating at cards. The most important thing is for you to come out on top. You are always looking for the quick buck and for this reason I hope the luck is about you. Like all gypsies you follow your own moral code that outsiders wouldn't understand, be you natural Rom or not. So the question is, are you holding two aces or two duces?

Take Which Vampire the Masquerade Clan Are You? at HelloQuizzy

I'm mildly amused that Toreador, Malkavian, and Tzimisce were all right up there too.
